
TIKTOK THUMBNAILS
NIEUWSBLAD
The TikTok account of newspaper Nieuwsblad publishes three videos per day. Being a mix of format videos, breaking news and recreational videos, the TikTok feed is a collection of various topics and visuals. To maintain a visual identity, templates were created to implement in every video that gets posted online. By integrating a ‘title shape’ as overlay on moving images, we created a frame that can be used as the typical TikTok boomerang thumbnail. I was responsible of creating this solution and designing different versions of the overlay shape.
Feed
At first, when creating a brand new TikTok account for Nieuwsblad, we used in-app features to create thumbnails on our feed.
We decided to use a blue color, that matches our color palette the most. However, we felt that the identity of the brand was missing. Only a logo at the top reminded you which page you were viewing.
This is a before and after image, showing the impact of using our own colors. The titels are placed on the same spot, creating a structured feed, while the images remain very diverse.
Various colors
The shape, created in After Effects and to be used in Premiere Pro, also needed to show what type of video you were about to see.
All news video’s are provided by stickers in dark blue, with a title on two lines. This way users get the information about the topic very clear and simple.
Orange and pink colors were assigned to interviews and portraits of people. These different type of videos also got an additional logo. this way the video differs in terms of content and visually from the rest of the content.
